Mobile Internet Has Grown by 74% in 2 Years
May 11, 2009 by: adminResearch from Nielsen shows that the global mobile Internet market grew 74% between February 2007 and February 2009. This is largely due to the expansion of smartphones and the availability of unlimited data packages.
According to Nielsen, the iPhone had a US audience of 5.1 million unique users in January. "Though this still represents just a fraction of the mobile universe, the device has had an undeniable halo effect on mobile media adoption," says Nielsen.

Nielsen’s findings indicate that iPhone users are:
- more than 4 times as likely as a typical subscriber to use mobile Internet
- 6 times as likely to use mobile apps
- 6 times as likely to consumer mobile video
"This summer, new phones like the Palm Pre, updates to Blackberry offerings, and phones using Google Android OS aim to challenge the iPhone’s ‘cool’ factor with touchscreens, mobile apps and other features," says Nielsen.

Android use is actually expected to grow by 900% this year. Today, Doug pointed to a new report from Strategy Analytics stating that shipments should outpace the growth of all other mobile operating systems by an astounding amount.
