Most Influential Twitter Users Named

December 17, 2009 by: admin

It’s an odd little ecosystem in which a Scottish fellow most people haven’t heard of ranks above the President of the United States, celebrities worth gazillions of dollars, and, well, everybody.  But that’s the state of things on Twitter, according to a new report from INQ that named Mashable’s CEO, Pete Cashmore, the "top international influencer."

INQ looked at five different factors to determine its rankings, including number of followers, number of tweets, times referenced, and some data related to retweets.  Cashmore – whom we sincerely congratulate – came out on top worldwide.  (For what it’s worth, he’s got a little more than 1.8 million followers at the moment.)

Next was P. Diddy (2.3 million followers), followed by Stephen Fry (1.1 million).  Oprah snagged fourth place, while Kim Kardashian ranked fifth.  From there, Ellen DeGeneres, Ryan Seacrest, Barack Obama, Ashton Kutcher, and Britney Spears rounded out the top ten.

Biz Stone, Twitter’s cofounder, wound up in 14th place, if you’re curious.

It’s hard to conclude too much from this list, considering that it’s a very mixed bag.  But it looks like Twitter remains a site most people go to for entertainment, rather than hard news or anything else.
